Dunn’s River Falls – Jamaica

“What would you like to do today?” Chuck asked on our last day in Jamaica. “Relax. I want to enjoy the view, maybe walk around the resort.” I answered as the tropical air enveloped me on our private deck. “Anything you want.” My husband obliged. An hour later Chuck was at the excursion desk inquiring, “Are there any excursions that we could join today?” “Da Haydens! ” Derrick greeted us enthusiastically and nodded, “Yea, Dunn’s Falls leaves at 1:00 pm, mon. Ya wanna go?” Both Chuck and I smiled in agreement. We really aren’t good at relaxing. Embracing life’s experiences, challenging ourselves, building connections and making memories are more our speed. Moments later we returned to the pick up area, changed into our water shoes and suits, ready for an adventure.

Waves folded over the reefs creating calm waters near the resort.
This was the amazing view from our balcony, but we wanted adventure!

Our Ride

“Several movies have been filmed at Dunn’s Falls.” I mentioned to Chuck as we climbed into a resort van with another couple. “Dr. No, a James Bond movie, Cocktail (1988) and America’s Next Top Model (2003)” I listed a few that I recalled from my research before our trip. “It’s a pretty popular spot with the locals, too.” I was excited to see this naturally occurring, legendary landmark!

Dunn’s River Falls

Through the lush greenery we could hear the rush of the fresh, spring water cascading over the lime stone. Excited voices carried over the din of the falls. The roaring sounds gave way to childhood excitement fluttering in my belly.

Las Chorreras

The original name of the falls was Las Chorreras, a Spanish name. The Spanish had taken control of the island following Christopher Columbus’ visit in the late 1400’s. In 1657 the English took possession of Jamaica from the Spaniards. The name, “Las Chorreras,” morphed into “Ocho Rios,” which means Eight Rivers. However, there are truly only four rivers in the area. Ocho Rios is the name of the village still used today.

The Jamaican government acquired Dunn’s River Falls in 1972. A phased plan of improvements has continued since. New roads and scenic decks have been added while keeping the natural beauty in tact. There’s been a zip line installed, too!

Randy, Our Guide

Randy, our guide, led us down several flights of cement stairs to the beach. “Yea, Mon. Every morning we scrub da rocks so dey no slippery.”

Randy brought us down several flights of stairs to the beach. That’s where we’d begin our ascent.

Right away one family left our group, deciding to stay at the beach and not climb the falls. The beach also appeared to be enticing to me, too.

Our Climb Began

I wondered if my knees would be sturdy enough for this massive climb.
I considered joining the family at the beach.

“Well,” I silently gave myself a pep talk, “I can either climb the stairs or climb these falls with a guide…either way my knees will have a lot to ‘say’ by the end of the day.”

Randy instructed us to follow him, “I know da bes way.” Sure enough, I could see where the algae on the rocks had been scrubbed with a wire brush. “I’ll be just fine.” I said to myself. Ever since I’ve had four orthopedic recoveries, I have been hesitant to do anything more physically demanding than therapy exercises. I decided to pack away my concerns and focus on the fun.

I still concentrated on each step while channeling the mystery of this waterfall. With the calendar set to February, I was enchanted by this tropical setting.

The cascading water laughed as it slid over the limestone boulders.

Randy graciously captured a moment for us to remember our hike. Recognizing my hesitation when I couldn’t see my next step through the bubbles, Randy would offer me his hand.

“Randy, how long does it take you to climb to the top?” “Oh, I can do it in seven minutes, mon.” Randy nodded with a smile.

The Top!

I made it to the top! I was relieved I’d accomplished the climb without an injury. What had I been so worried for anyway? Chuck has said that my exercise plan includes, “jumping to conclusions and flying off the handle.” My confidence had grown by accomplishing this task. I don’t need to tie myself down with worry.

We did it!

I encourage you to take a climb outside your comfort zone. Try something new even if you feel there may be limitations. Ascending the tropical Dunn’s River Falls during a winter month has become a memory I will cherish.
