Just a couple miles off shore in Lake Michigan is the Waugoshance Light Station. It was built before the Civil War and still stands today, but barely. The Mackinac Straits are dangerous for ships and the Waugoshance Light marked dangerous shoals at the entrance to the Straits of Mackinac. It was the first “Crib Lighthouse” on the Great Lakes.

Today, 3 crib lighthouses stand near Mackinac – White Shoal, Grays Reef and Waugoshance.

The Waugoshance Light is in bad shape. It has a long and interesting history. We take a trip to Waugoshance to see if it is still standing.
